¡Qué alivio! A tough Cain Velasquez should be training again in December.

While the entire country of Mexico has been in mourning for a week, an arthroscopic physician has just offered its population a giant surgical tissue, and the healing can begin. After successful surgery for a partially torn meniscus, Cain Velasquez should be training again in December

Interestingly, the tear happened weeks before Cain suffered a strained MCL in training, the injury that actually forced him to withdraw from UFC 180. The tough Mexican champion had been training despite the meniscus tear.

“Before that, he was training kicking, in his sparring session on Monday (Oct. 13), he looked fantastic,” Mendez said to MMAFighting. “His wrestling, his takedown defense, he looked really good. We were right on track, and then his knee started locking up when he was sprawling (Oct. 16).”

A partially torn meniscus is not as serious an issue as, say, a torn ACL. And so, Cain should be able to begin training again in a month, after the strain is properly rested. MMAFighting speculates Cain may be ready to fight at UFC 184 in Los Angeles, in front of the city’s strong Hispanic population.

“I assume he’ll be good to go for full-time training by December,” Mendez continued. “He’ll have all of November and part of October off. I don’t see him being out that long at all.”
