I once built a 590 horsepower Volkswagen Corrado with a six-speed transmission that unintentionally shifted multiple lanes on the highway in any gear. It was easily the most dangerous vehicle in modern automotive history, but also the most exciting. There’s something to be said about not knowing whether or not you’re going to live or die when you press the accelerator. The first time I gave my mom a ride in it was also the last time she ever let me drive her anywhere. Soon after a random evening of highway jackassery, I shot a piston through the hood and decided to part the car out for something that offered more practical gas mileage than 6 mpg. Don’t worry, fuel was cheap back then. I could fill the tank for $38.00 and drive around for a whole 90 minutes, unlike today. Chances are I’ll never own a cooler car than that Corrado, and while it makes me sad, we can all live vicariously through Pat Barry who shares the joys of scaring the crap out of his mother on the highway in this Corvette rental car.
