Koscheck claims that the UFC requested he instigate beef with BJ Penn

If Josh Koscheck was a Magic: The Gathering player, he’d probably play a blue deck. In Magic, blue mages are generally sneaky and manipulative and have a reputation for stalling the fight and slowing their opponent down. That’s how I like to play Skyrim but in Magic I prefer playing green and of course, green and blue are enemies. I’m not saying Josh and I are enemies because I’ve never met the guy but if we met up and played some Magic, I’d expect a rivalry based on deck to arise.

In real life, I’m sure Josh is a good guy but in the media he likes to portray himself as a Loki figure; manipulating and instigating. From the first time we seen him on The Ultimate Fighter, through his appearance as a coach opposite GSP to just a few weeks ago, almost every time we hear about Josh, it seems like he’s plotting, or scheming or tricking other fighters. Whether you like it or not, it’s entertaining and it sells tickets, which is probably why the folks at UFC asked him to stir up something between he and BJ Penn in order to lure BJ out of retirement. As he said on Spike’s MMA Uncensored:

“Me and B.J. have a good relationship. Its business and, you know what? I like to have big fights. I think that B.J. is the type of fighter that would be a big fight for me. The UFC asked to try and stir up something. You know, I do my job well, and I went on to my Twitter account, and just kinda said, ‘Hey, B.J. Let’s do this fight.’”

We call him an instigator; in the fight business you call him marketable and clearly the UFC know that when Koscheck calls someone out, everyone will want to hear the smack talk. Unfortunately BJ has thicker skin than that. Koscheck should really have taken to the forums and started an insulting photoshop trend or something. That would have really got people’s attention.
