Return of the back! Thiago Silva is injured and out of the Shogun fight!

Man, Thiago Silva has no luck at all. First he gets busted for using non-human urine in his pee-pee test after making Brandon Vera’s nose look like this because he took a banned substance to numb his back pain and now the same problem has arisen again. No, not the urine, Thiago Silva’s back is playing up again. This time his recurring back injury has forced him to pull out of the bout with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua scheduled for UFC 149. I’d never condone the use of prohibited substances in MMA however his reasons can be understood, at least and while dropping out of this bout is disappointing for us as fans at least he’s learned his lesson and won’t be fighting despite injecting steroids into his back this time.

So what happens to Shogun? Well, there are reports that the UFC have contacted Glover Teixeira to fill in for Silva on short notice, which would be an equally explosive fight. Rumours of Shogun turning down Teixeira as a possible opponent are unsubstantiated at this time but to be honest, you probably wouldn’t blame Shogun if this were true. Teixeira is a bad, bad man. It seems unlikely that Silva will need surgery for his back but he will be out for an indefinite length of time while he heals. I don’t know about you but I’d take bed rest over a needle in the back any day. Props if you get the pun in the title. [source]
