Oh yay! Diego Sanchez is moving back down to lightweight street

When Diego Sanchez fights I’m destined to break an appendage or sprain a joint. It’s just the way things happen when I watch Diego Sanchez fights. I no longer have a coffee table in my living room thanks to the injuries I’ve incurred while suddenly jumping from the couch during Diego Sanchez fights. I broke a few toes during his 2009 fight with Clay Guida by attempting to jump over a coffee table in unbridled passionate enthusiasm. Then just a few months later I tripped on the leg of the coffee table while running around the room during his BJ Penn title shot fight and sprained an ankle.

With Diego Sanchez earning six fight of the night honors since entering the UFC and two of those being deemed fight of the year (2006-vs Karo Parisian at UFC Fight Night 6 and 2009 at TUF Season 9 US vs UK Finale vs Clay Guida) it is not likely that I’m going to stop physically celebrating during one of his fights because a Diego Sanchez fight is usually the kind of fight that causes an uncontrolled spontaneous urge to jump up, scream and run around the room performing a sloppy gymnastic-like floor routine. Instead I just decided to remove my coffee table and my couch and now there are less pieces of furniture for me to potentially trip over.

Good thing I did that, because Sanchez has just come out via his twitter and announced he is dropping back down to lightweight. He’s fought at welterweight since 2010 and done well with three of those fights earning fight of the night honors and two of them earning a giant checkmark in his stats “W” column.

What makes the timing of this return to lightweight announcement from Diego interesting, is the recent happenings with Rory MacDonald being forced to drop out of his fight with BJ Penn due to a cut above his eyebrow. That leaves BJ, who agreed to come out of retirement for the Rory fight without an opponent. According to recent tweets, Sanchez is still sidelined with an injury but for how long? He could be looking for a rematch to attempt to avenge his loss to BJ Penn in 2009. Or he could be looking to get matched with one the other top contenders at 155.
