Jacob Volkman is on a mission to 'expose' the UFC, and this is what he said...

The best way to describe Jacob Volkmann to a neophyte MMA fan is that he's sort of the 'substitute teacher' version of Chael Sonnen. Sure he wants to be controversial, but the way Volkmann releases words from his mouth gives the subtle suggestion that he's actually crazy enough to do whatever he says.

Moments after Jacob Volkmann handed Antonio McKee his first loss in nearly seven years, Ariel Helwani cornered him with a microphone backstage at UFC 125. Unlike us, Helwani doesn't need to use thorazine-tipped darts to sedate fighters in order for them to talk. After Volkmann commented on his win over McKee, he also decided to throw a few verbal overhand-rights towards our US president, Barack Obama. Before UFC 125, our government had no idea Volkmann existed. However days after his statement, the US Secret Service visited Jacob Volkmann to discuss his statement that he would like to 'knock some sense' into Obama.

Now in an aggressive interview with Above and Beyond MMA, Volkmann says that he wants fans to realize what the UFC is really like, and he wants to expose the organization as much as he can. Check out these excerpts from the revealing interview.

Well, I didn’t realize there was that much politics in martial arts, especially in the UFC. That was kind of frustrating. It’s not who is the best; it’s more of a political kind of BS.

You’ve got to know the right person, have the right manager in there. And your style determines if you stay in, too. The guys that stand and bang are the ones who are still fighting for the UFC. The ones that take the fights to the ground and focus more on the technique on the ground, they’re not in there because apparently the fans don’t like that. That really bothers me because the UFC made the interest of the sport more of a stand-up fight because that’s what they put on the main card and that’s what the fans saw. They started liking that more than the ground game. That’s what really bothers me.

They always claim that they treat the fighters so well. Yeah, they treat the top five per cent of the fighters well — the ones that are on the main card all the time. They don’t treat the rest of them very well. The healthcare plan is horrible, with a $1,500 deductible per injury — the catastrophic-injury insurance is not even really good insurance. There’s no retirement fund, there’s no signing bonus. You start off at six-and-six, you’re really not making too much money because you’re self-employed, so you’re paying the self-employment tax and you’re paying the regular tax and income tax. So you’re paying twice as much in tax. They claim they’re treating the fighters well, but they’re not, realistically.

People always tell me, “You’re rich — you’re on TV!” Are you kidding me? I made $54,000 two years ago, paid $9,000 in taxes, so that leaves me with $45,000. This last year, I made $50,000 and paid $8,000 in taxes. That leaves me with $42,000 — that’s barely above poverty. I have three kids and a wife I’m supporting.

I’m trying to make the fans realize what the UFC is really like — I’m going to expose them as much as I can. But also my goal is to win in World Series and try to stay undefeated. Obviously it’s to win. The short-term goal is to win. The long-term goal is, as soon as they come out with that belt, I’d like to get that belt.

If you listen real close you can hear the sizzle and cracking from the bridge Jacob Volkmann just burned between him and the UFC.

now he's making $500/$500. lol! you have to do something once you go to the ground! another boring wrestler complaining about the ufc, when it's his lack of technique that got him canned.

all the things he complains about, he voted against: healthcare, unions, pensions.

I think Volkmann makes some points that are true. The UFC want fighters who the fans like. Pro sports isn't just about pure sport. It's also important to be entertaining so that fans spend their money on it.

It is kind of ironic that Volkmann complains about having to pay for healthcare to his future employees but complains about not having enough health insurance from the UFC.

I'm not completely sold on universal healthcare. Is there anything in the legislation that will actually reduce cost?

I don't think medical institutions and pharmaceutical companies are evil but they are for profit organizations. It would be unethical to their owners and/or share holders if they didn't try to make as much money as possible.

There's a Doctor named Jeffrey Brenner who has a lot of good ideas that he's actually acting on it to help provide better care at lower cost. From the interviews I've seen and articles I read about him, he seems to be motivated by more than just money. He's really pragmatic and has a lot of novel ideas. He doesn't seem like an ideologue.

Here's a short video of him talking about hotspotting. The interviewer said a lot of people think hotspotting is the answer but Brenner said it's not the answer, it's just a small part. That's what I mean by how pragmatic he is.
-
It's only 2 minutes long but really insightful.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiiRDU2Nl08

There's a lot of good interviews of Brenner on youtube. I like his approach because he appreciate the benefits of for profit privately owned organizations in the healthcare industry. He also understands that the relationships between corporations, hospitals, doctors, patients, politicians, etc. are really complicated. His ideas seem really common sense and practical while simultaneously being sophisticated with attention to the nuance of what's needed.

That's one of the reasons I like Ronda Rousey so much. She pays attention to nuance. She recognize prizefighting for what it is. It's fighting for a prize. She put a lot of thought into how she markets herself. She said she wanted to combine an exciting fighting style like Anderson with an entertaining out of the ring persona like Chael.
-
It's 8 minutes long.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbeyx_DTHgw

But Ronda also fights for more than just the money and the fame. This is a clip from her interview with Time.
-
Interviewer:
On why Rousey thinks mixed martial arts – a brutal, violent sport – has inherent beauty …

Ronda Rousey:
I try not to have a single wasted movement. Everything is for a reason, everything is for a purpose. I’m not coming in and flailing and brawling. This is a martial art. It’s an art that I’ve perfected over a very long time, that I’ve put a lot of work into. There’s something pretty about it. I consider myself a practical physicist. You know, I work with physics, I understand them. I don’t actually have to do the formulas, but I’ve memorized enough where I can make decisions based off of what’s going on.

Last I checked the Poverty line was around $12,000/year. Also last I check the UFC was the highest paying mma outfit out there.
Also he says guys that stand and bang don't get cut but guys that take it to the ground get cut. So Maia,Chael and Clay Guida are out the door! I'm sure he'd have some counter points but he just sounds stupid.
He has a wife and 3 kids to feed? Sounds like 4 bad decisions to me.

It is either that or a promotion that can compete with the UFC driving up the prices. The way it is now the UFC has no need to pay their fighers more money even tho they have been growing for years.

As far as insurance deductibles being pricey. You yanks keep voting against health care and have a corrupt health insurance system what do you expect? I could see that not being a big issue for the Canadian and international fighters who have universal health care. Just sayin :-*

1. america has never voted against universal health care...maybe you mean obamacare but those arent the same thing.

2.for the most part hes right. im not sure how much exposing hes doing, but its not secret the new guys and lower level fighers are WAY under paid for what they do.

3. unions are NOT the answer...yes they have benefits but they end up screwing the people they represent...the fighers just need to band together and demand to be paid more. if you get enough and the right fighters behind it i doubt it would be to difficult.

sounds like, yes, but in an unofficial capacity...if youre part of a union and they decide something is an issue to them no matter how you feel about it its now your issue too. if there is a union fighters would HAVE to be part of it. this way they can still up their pay but they dont have to be committed to anything long term that they might not like in the future.

Floyd Mayweather made a smart move by co-promoting himself. He make's a bigger cut than he would otherwise. I'm not sure that model will ever work in MMA because of how the promoters also make their own rankings. In boxing the ranking bodies are independent of the promoters. There's a lot of shenanigans in the rankings still but at least there's some degree of separating. In MMA there's none at all. But Mayweather is such a big name that people recognize him as the champ whether he fights for a belt or not.

the ufc should be doing more for the bottom fighters in terms of money/insurance.

to get to that level you dedicate your entire life to it. you dont really have the time/energy to build a career on the side.

not every fighter will make it to the ufc, its the risk you take chasing your dreams. but id like to see the ones who do given the pay/insurance they deserve, especially when the company can afford it easily.

i think healthcare should be provided for life once a fighter is in the ufc for 3+ fights or so for free. who knows the long term damage that will be endured by the athlete not only in the fights, but the training camps themselves.

Just look at Bas Rutten, he had to retire early in his career due to injury and without being the personality he is he wouldve been fucked for money.

he is still having major on-going injuries which i doubt many pro fighters could afford to deal with unless they had insurance.
