WHOATV – We stick a microphone in Ariel Helwani’s face and get an interesting interview. How meta.

When it was first published in 1986, Watchmen was a ground breaking look at the superhero archetypes. Writer Alan Moore & artist Dave Gibbons rattled the very foundation of the comic book premise: that the heroes were larger than life characters meant to save us from the world. Instead, they showed them to be just a flawed and broken as any other human being. The phrase “Who watches the watchmen?” is referenced throughout, demanding that the public not blindly surrender their personal responsibility, but instead hold those in power accountable.

Fast forward 28 years and enter Jonathan Shrager from WhoaTV.com, who faithfully carries Moore’s axiom into the MMA sphere. During the build up to last weekend’s Fight Night in Dublin, Ireland, Shrager turned the microphone on MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, the four time reigning and defending MMA Journalist of the Year. Not cowed by the Canadian’s resume, Shrager wades in on all things relevant: working for the UFC while still remaining objective, over-saturation of the market place, card dilution, Chael Sonnen, super fights, and much more. Check out the video below for the full interview.

(Speaking of references to things that were good in the 80s but then given a fresh coat of paint in the 2000s: Ariel’s still rocking a tattered Montreal Expos sweatshirt. Give it up, Helwani. The Nationals are our team now.)
