I love saying Gennady Golovkin’s name. Gennady Golovkin Gennady Golovkin. As you read that last sentence out loud you thought to yourself, “Hey, I also like saying that name”. Welcome to the club.
GGG is 30 wins and 0 losses, with 27 Knockouts. He’s knocked out every opponent he’s fought since 2009 (16 KO’s in a row) and is the current WBA and IBO Middleweight Champion.
Marco Antonio Rubio is a very exciting fighter who’s knocked out 14 of his last 20 opponents dating back to 2008. His last loss was to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2012 for the WBC Middleweight Championship. Since then he’s won 6 in a row, taking the Interm WBC Middleweight Championship in his most recent fight.
Miguel Cotto. Since his loss to Floyd Mayweather, he’s gone 2-1. In that time however, he rebounded from a loss to Austin Trout to TKO Delvin Rodriguez in the 3rd and literally retired Sergio Martinez on the stool in the 9th to win the Ring, WBC and Lineal Middleweight Championship.
So right now the set up is GGG vs Rubio on October 13th with the winner getting shot at them all against Cotto.
Boxing can get confusing with its championships, but the Lineal Championship is something MMA fans can relate too. Though in MMA its not looked at as much, Cain Velasquez Became the Lineal Heavyweight Champion when he beat Antonio Silva in 2013 (Fedor had it, Werdum beat Fedor, Overeem beat Werdum, Bigfoot KO’d Overeem, Cain crushed Bigfoot). The Lineal Championship is simply a title, not an actual belt, and is passed only through beating the Lineal Champ, regardless of promotion or circumstance.
As an avid MMA fan, this is something I can get behind. I admit I’m a big Golovkin fan, but Rubio is a great fighter and Cotto is a legend. I’ll compare it to something like Daniel Cormier fighting Alexander Gustafsson with the winner fighting Bones Jones, instead of Jones just fighting them both. I’m looking at it as the top two contenders, each worthy of a title shot, fighting each other for a crack at the gold. Though Boxing has a reputation for being boring lately, that definitely does not apply here.
Let’s get a little excited about Boxing. It’s been a while, and I think it’s time to give it another chance.
