Throwback Thursday! Jushin Liger made his MMA debut 12 years ago this week

MMA twelve years ago might as well be centuries ago. Fedor just made his Pride debut, Big Nog was coming off one of the best fights in the history of MMA when he faced Bob Sapp and twelve years and two days ago, we saw a legend step into the ring. A legend whose MMA career only lasted one fight, a career which started with a kappo kick. That legend is no other than Jushin “Thunder” Liger.

Now for those we aren’t aware, Jushin “Thunder” Liger is one of the most decorated Japanese wrestlers in the history of the sport. He was a late minute replacement to face fellow legend Minoru Suzuki. The fact that this fight happened is one of the reasons I fell in love with MMA in the first place. The fact that we don’t’ have these fights anymore is a reason why I’m falling out of love with the sport. Twelve years later and we have no freak fights, we have generic collegiate wrestler vs. generic local golden gloves champ.

Someone change this, please. We need more people like Jushin “Thunder” Liger in the sport. If you can watch this fight and disagree then I’m afraid you might just be taking MMA a little too seriously.
