DEVELOPING: Mayweather and Pacquiao to Fight, UFC Needs New Strawman

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, February 22, 2015 — This week there was a major development in the world of combat sports when the dream fight of Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao became official. This fight has been discussed for at least seven years now and felt like it would never happen, but finally on May 2nd, 2015 Manny Pacquiao will step into the ring with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and the two biggest stars of the combat sports world will collide, finally answering the burning question of who beats who.

For years the inability for the boxing world’s promoters, networks and managers to get together and make the biggest fight of this generation happen has been the UFC’s strawman. The UFC has long used that fight as a shining example of how the UFC is better than boxing. Manny vs. Floyd will never happen, they said, but Anderson Silva vs. Stephan Bonnar is not only a fight that we can make, but it’s the fight that you really dream of.

The UFC finds itself in a rather embarrassing position now, considering they put together one super fight in the past few years that ended with both fighters failing drug tests and awaiting their respective sentences, most likely neither man fighting for a very long time. The forecast for 2015 shows few fights that have even a fraction of the interest that Mayweather/Pacquiao has, which means that Dana White and company will need to develop a new talking point to position the UFC above boxing.

We eagerly await the next great white hype to show us the way, but with the amount of money on the line for this fight the UFC feels a bit like the kiddie pool.
