Clay Guida just redeemed the 2010 Chicago Bears football season. As a Chicagoan, last season’s conference finals loss to the loathed Packers that reside in caves made of chedder just a few hours north of me stung bitterly. Stung bitterly like the cold winds of Soldier Field in December. Residents of the windy city had to deal with years of Brett Favre throwing his way to the hall of fame while we employed a roster of “quarterbacks” that wouldn’t even be allowed to look at Brett Favre’s game worn jock, let alone try it on for a few seconds alone in the locker room, and now the Packers throw Favre away to be replaced by a superior model?
Diehard Bears fan Clay Guida just embodied the Monsters of the Midway 85 style and went out there and pushed the pace with smashmouth wrestling that left Milwaukee sports bar owner and huge Packer fan Anthony Pettis confused and fighting valiantly off his back for the majority of the fifteen minute affair. Pettis did what he could by keeping an incredibly active guard that would have made Miguel Torres proud, working submissions with attempted sweeps and upkicks at a furious pace. None of it mattered, not even a late taking of Guida’s back. Guida worked the wrestling, had an answer for everything Pettis brought to him and now Guida enters the upper echelon of the UFC lightweight division.
I try not to be biased, but this feels good. Chicago sports are rough right now, but at least we will never be Cleveland…
