The average age of a gamer is 30 and other interesting gaming facts that were just discovered

The average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 35 -- probably because 35-year olds have finally realized that life will never get better than what it currently is. You will not be in a rock band or some famous movie actor living in Hollywood. By the age of 35 your dream of being a millionaire has completely dissolved as you become content living inside your cozy office workplace.

According to this 2013 Entertainment Software Association 'Essential Facts About The Computer and Video Game Industry,' the best selling game genre in 2012 was 'action' which is probably directly attributed to all those lunatics that believe Gears of War and Call of Duty are actually quality franchises. Shame on you and your inability to pick up Mass Effect or Battlefield.

If you feel like thumbing through the entire ESA report, feel free to check out the .pdf, or you can just scroll below and look at the most interesting tidbits of the study. Props to Gin Rummy on the news tip and enjoy your 100 points.

Zeus is represented by Galactus in his avatar image because he has an immature obsession with Marvel when they went all sci-fi back in the mid 80s. I'm the creator of MiddleEasy and Nickelodeon's The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Just kidding about the Nickelodeon stuff, but that would be really cool.

I never would have guessed that women made up such a large portion of the gaming population. I wish my lady was into it. At least she likes MMA. I guess you can't win them all...

Women might be a large portion of gamers but they mostly play those lame ass facebook games, casual "just dance" games,MMO's (WoW, GW2 - Not the Original yet way better GW), and CoD. Seriously. Every time I feel like shooting some zombies I either team up with 11 year old boys or 19 year old whiney c***s. I don't mind that Women play but lets not full ourselves. They play shitty casual games.

And by the way. Wtf are Action games? They have shooters, fighting and role playing. Aren't those action games as well? Why have a completely separate category for action games? Doesn't make any damn sense.

Just a little thing I picked up on that I thought was strange is that the average gamer is 30 years old and has been gaming for 13 years? So they started playing games in their last year of high school? It might be strange to me because I picked up games when I was 6 yrs old. Sega Genesis' Mortal Kombat, Super Street Fighter II and Sonic the Hedgehog/II/3. Been gaming for 17 years now and it's hard to image picking it up late as a teenager.

Fyi: I have been playing games since I was five and have been playing them for twenty years and I started on Final Fantasy, Super Mario Bros, and Duck Hunt, because they were on the console before Sega, the NES. I did have a Sega, also, and played the games you mentioned. I understand that I am a minority, but I do exist. You are correct about most girls, but most guys play stupid mindless shooters or horrible sports games.

You are wrong. My wife plays hardcore shooters, RPG's etc. It's normal for women to play where I live.

Maybe you should just talk to some women/girls and find out that your misconceptions doesn't fit reality?

As Connor already stated, these numbers are pretty skewed though and relatively unhelpful to marketing execs. If Sony thinks "Oh, look, girls buy games, we need to make pink PS4s, they'll fly off the shelves", they would have a lot of warehouses full of pink PS4s. If you take away smartphones (and I hate to be this guy, but no "gamer" would suggest that a person who plays iPhone games or casual Facebook games like Candy Crush or Farmville is a "gamer"), I would suggest those numbers change drastically.

I believe women play video games, sure, my mom fucking loves the Zelda series, but this market research would suggest that advertising agencies should be spending equal time trying to market to women, and I would suggest that would be a waste of money.

I'm 35 so I guess I am in the sweet spot to buy games as far as these numbers go. I find myself buying games less and paying the mortgage/car payment, or even getting cloths for the kids more.

Also, If most gamers are in there 30 most people have been playing games for closer to 25 years. why would you average all gamers together? You will just hit the middle every-time.

It would be cool to also see the BMI of the average gamer, also the amount of money spent each year and what percent is that of their annual salary, how many live at with their parents still, the average salary of a gamer and how many have children, if any, they have...
