Next Unreal Tournament Game Will Be Absolutely Free

So I was never much of a Quake guy, if I’m honest with everyone here. I enjoyed Quake 2 for what it was, but most of my big time nerdery came for me in high school when Unreal Tournament was released. Unreal Tournament was just incredible at the time, it was my first real taste of playing an online, competitive shooter where I found myself hooked in and playing it every day. Hell, I even went as far as to get involved with making maps and mods with a few of my good friends at the time. Unreal Tournament was just huge.

Of course, that was 1999 and the world of gaming has kind of moved on from the Unreal Tournament vs. Quake 3 Arena feud that existed at the time. In fact, it is a distant memory, something that newer gamers aren’t even aware of at this point, which is kind of sad. The folks at Epic Games have also seemingly moved on from the Unreal Series as a whole, instead opting to license out the Unreal engine to everyone and their mother, with that being their real cash cow outside of the Gears of War franchise.

So consider me shocked today when Epic Games announced that they would be developing and releasing a new Unreal Tournament game, the first since 2007’s Unreal Tournament 3. The catch on this one? It’s going to be free. No, not free-to-play, but free. Free free. That means nothing, the game is going to cost you nothing. It is being developed by a small team in-house at Epic Games who have worked on past Unreal Tournament games and will rely heavily on the Unreal Tournament community online to provide assistance with everything from coding to maps, textures, music and everything else that they can help with.

In a way, it will be a crowd-sourced game, but the crowd-sourcing won’t be for money, but just resources. Since the game will be developed by a small group at Epic and possibly a larger group of volunteers outside of Epic, they’ve decided that the game should be entirely free. This is pretty rad, right?
