Joanne Calderwood, judging by this picture she's either proud of being from Scotland or protesting against the color blue. You've undoubtedly seen her crushing knee-to-the-body KO over Ashley Cummins at Invicta FC 3 and this past weekend (if you were able to get your Ustream working) her unanimous decision victory over Austria's Livia von Plettenberg. However most of you may have missed a rather sneaky standing elbow that she pulled off later on in her Invicta FC 4 bout. Notice how she closed the distance by faking the lower-leg kick, forcing her opponent to drop her hands to block it, and then catching her with a slick side-stepping elbow jab. My god, why haven't we seen more of this in MMA? Aside from being aesthetically appealing, the move is done at such an interesting angle that the probability of successfully blocking it is minimal at best.

Props to Calderwood on her covert standing-elbow and hopefully we'll get to see more from the undefeated fighter in the immediate future. Oh, you want to follow her on Twitter? Sure, go ahead, it's @Badmofo_JoJo. Tell her how much of a badass she is -- although we're sure she already knows.

No it isn't. Firstly, the opponent is moving completely the wrong way to throw a hook. Secondly, Joanne's whole upper body is moving away from her opponent in order to defend any sort of counter (especially her head). Liva would have to have a Jon Jones reach to hit her. Thirdly, The elbow came from below and in Muay Thai is called sok hud. The main defence or counter to this is footwork or head movement and then a kick to the ribs. In this case, Livia would have had better success with a right knee to the body but then, it was a very unorthodox move so it's not like she had a chance to either block or counter, particularly because as Zeus stated, Joanne faked a leg kick first.

I've not seen the fights from Invicta yet but it makes me happy to see Jo getting coverage like this. She really is a world class striker and there aren't too many people in MMA today who can match her pedigree, especially in the female world. She'l hold the Invicta belt in one or two fights.
