The amount of attention UFC 157 is receiving is amazing. We’d like to think we predicted this would happen, but we’re not that intelligent. In fact, it’s not just women’s MMA – Danica Patrick is also the first woman to start from pole position in this weekend’s Daytona 500, marking the first woman to lead off America’s most anticipated race. That actually takes place less than 24 hours after Ronda Rousey headlines her first UFC PPV. It’s a huge weekend for women’s sports, and despite the eclectic mixture of overwhelming support and irrational sexism in the comments, we’re happy for anything that encourages equality, so we’ll keep writing about it because that’s what we stand for. We also stand for video games, microwavable TV dinners, botany, and walking on any patches of grass that have signs saying we shouldn’t walk on it.

Check out the UFC’s video that brings you up to date on how we got here; and by here, I mean this weekend that technically hasn’t happened yet. In an alternate universe, this weekend already happened, it was magical, and women are now competing in all sports on mainstream television as commonly as men. The only people who doubt that alternate reality exists are skeptics who have really comfortable sofas and fully-stocked snack bins. It’s cool, I’ve been there. I thought I knew what I was talking about back then too.
