Thiago Alves is fighting John Howard at UFC 124 and we're all going to like it

Thiago Alves is fighting John Howard at UFC 124 and we're all going to like it

A couple of days ago on MMAJunkie radio, Mike Pierce called out Thiago Alves and had some pretty decent smack talk regarding Alves on Facebook. On Twitter, Pierce said 'This place is as dead as Thiago Alves' and 'Thiago Alves to be featured on Biggest Loser on Dec 23rd'. He even asked Dana to gi...

KJ Noons thinks Nick Diaz is a trash-talking, pot-smoking chump

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Nick Diaz and KJ Noons rivalry, the beef started back in Elite XC where a controversial doctor stoppage handed Diaz his only loss in the past 3 years. Winning a fight due to a doctor stoppage in the first round is a lot like winning a competitive ea...

Karo Parisyan is BACK in the UFC!

I could be looking too far into it, but when Dana says that you '[Expletive] the UFC' by pulling out of the fight the day before weigh-ins, it looks like that may denote a lifetime ban. In fact, it did constitute a lifetime ban in the promotion, but in ZUFFA years, a lifetime is only ten months....

Overeem accepts Fedor's challenge, plans to fight him after K-1

The greatest thing about Alistair Overeem accepting Fedor's challenge to fight him after he's done with the K-1 Grand Prix is that he actually watched a Bloodstain Lane video on a message board and responded. Next step for Alistair Overeem is to accept my friend request on Xbox Live. The guy plays...

Dan Henderson and Gegard Mousasi may get the next Strikeforce title shots, despite coming off losses

Here's the part M-1 Global did NOT translate: Fedor is seriously considering retirement PDF Print E-mail
Written by Zeus
Saturday, 19 June 2010 15:54

Fedor arrived in Los Angeles roughly around the same time the Lakers claimed their second consecutive championship. It wasn't a coincidence. Fedor called that the Lakers would win in game seven before the series even started. He flew to LA in order for two GOATs to appear in the same location at exactly the same time. Its occurrence is the sports world's equivalent of Haley's comet. The next day (and about three fruit trays later), Strikeforce held a conference call that featured The Last Emperor and Fabricio Werdum. This was perhaps the most candid we've ever seen Fedor. Aside from blatantly stating that he wasn't a fan of the UFC, when asked if he was planning on retiring, Fedor admitted that recently, he has seriously been considering retirement. At least that's what Fedor said, if you were on the call (or have a copy of it) then you may have heard something drastically different. Steven Bash, M-1 Global's attorney and Fedor's translator, left out an entire sentence in Fedor's response that, if translated, would have completely altered Fedor's answer.

Earlier today, with the help of our fluent Russian speaking bud, we've isolated that question and transcribed exactly what was said during this part of the conference call.

Fedor Emelianenko: (After a long pause) "Я не хочу так далеко забегать вперед. Я думаю только о предстоящем бое с Фабрисио вЕрдумом. Всё будет зависеть от того, как я в нем выступлю. Вот. У меня осталось два боя по контракту, дальше будем смотреть. Если буду чувствовать себя хорошо, то будем заключать новый контракт. Вот. Нооо... Я ВСЁ БОЛЬШЕ ДУМАЮ УЖЕ ОБ УХОДЕ."

The part in bold is what Steven Bash failed to translate. In English, it reads: "If I will feel good, I will sign a new contract. But, I am more and more thinking about retiring". There was also a part in the conference call where Fedor directly blames Strikeforce for not having his fight in April. Steven Bash translated this as: "It was between Strikeforce management and Vadim Finkelstein to decide".

The audio is there for anyone to listen to. In no way is this fabricated. We've been on this 'Fedor retirement story' earlier this month when we broke the news that Fedor will be running for political office and that he was considering retirement. When other media outlets contacted M-1 Global for a clarification, they confirmed Fedor's run for office but completely denied that Fedor may retire.

After Werdum, Fedor has one fight left on his contract which will hopefully be against Alistair Overeem sometime late in 2010 or early 2011. It's the fight we all want to see and judging by Fedor's recent statements, it very well could be his last. Bummer. Told you guys Fedor vs. Brock would never happen.

Zeus very nice job with providing a credible source this time.

I would actually like to see Fedor retire quite soon. MUCH rather than I would like to see him loose...

i'd rather see him retire too before he loses (that is if he never goes to the UFC...which obviously is not likely at all). If Fedor loses before he retires...I can't imagine the kinda of sh*t that will come out of Dana White's mouth. Might be entertaining tho...I still believe Overeem has as good a chance as anyone.

I believe you, I honestly do not believe that M-1 wants anyone knowing this either. Fedor is M-1 Global's bread and butter right now and if he were to retire he may literally take their brand with him. M-1 has done a good job of attaching their name on to bigger American promotions at little to no cost, but have not been able to establish brand recognition outside of the MMA community.
M-1 is probably doing there best job to cover this up as soon as possible too, because they would lose a lot of leverage in future negotiations with StrikeForce or the UFC after his current deal runs it's course.
Fedor has stated in recent interviews that he does not care how the MMA world perceives him or his legacy. Nor does he have interest in fighting for titles (against Overeem),becaus e they are meaningless in his eyes.

I think the more and more you dig back, you will find proof of Fedor possibly feeling content with what he has accomplished throughout his legendary career.

M-1 will never make as much money as they have with Fedor, the company will find it so hard to survive without him in my opinion. No other fighter has done as much for this sport, he is a hugh personality, people hate him and people love him, no one feels as strongly about Fedor as they do about any other fighter.

A lot of top sports figures retire around 33 to 35; his trainer said he doesn't punch as fast. He probably peaked a few years back. YES, he has still been beating everyone, but he has looked more human recently.

Can't really say Fedor's the sole reason for M-1, since regardless on whether M-1 Global is known here or not, the European market is theirs for the taking, Fedor or not.

It's funny how this coincides with Cro Cop's talks of retirement... Long live The Last Emperor!

How do you came to that enlightenement?

Did you read by any chance the sentence above saying it is -Clooney- or did you recognize him all by yourself?

Duh...

Huh. I would have interpreted that as him saying the outcome of his next fight will pretty much determine whether he signs a new contract with Strikeforce, not necessarily that he plans to retire... But *shrug*

I speak Russian fluently. First time I listened to the call, I didn't catch that because Fedor mumbled it out. Until I saw the actual words in Russian on your site I couldn't make out that sentence. I can see why Bash didn't translate it. Sometimes it's hard to make out things over a telephone speaker. Also he did say that he has no plans to retire soon multiple times. He is only considering the possibility, but has no solid plan to do so.

Did he say that in this particular call? I'm definitely not fluent in Russian, but I did run the last block of text through several different translators and consensus seemed to be that the word УХОДЕ means withdrawal or going away...which is why I was wondering if maybe what he meant was basically "if I still feel good about it, I'll sign another contract, but otherwise I'll go my own way." Am I way off base?

If you enter it into Google translate, here is what you get.

If I feel good, then we will sign a new contract. Here. DOE ... I was thinking more alone Go away. "

He is gonna lose to Overeem and retire, once Fedor loses the mystery is gone, he will no longer be the greatest fighter in the world, and he will be worth less. He is slowing down and getting hurt more and more. Great fighter tho!! shame to see him go.

This is Steve Bash, Fedor and M-1 Global's attorney and "interpreter."

I appreciate your story and correction on the translation. However, I assure you that not one word that Fedor said was intentionally meant to be excluded or changed by myself or M-1 Global. That is particularly why Fedor gave his answers over the phone in Russian rather than just having the media hear an interpreter's voice. Exact translation during these conferences is not easy, particularly for someone that is not a professional interpreter. There are no pauses, very few notes taken, and unfortunately some accuracy is lost in the process. But we try out best and I am willing to bet that we do a better job that most interpreters do for other fighters.

Thanks,

Steve

Soares does the same, interpret very good on the fly, well at least the stuff that he thinks is ok to translate...

I'm not shocked that such unimportanted parts were lost in translation.

Luckily the UFC bashing was translated correctly ;)

he's a fraud if he doesnt go to the UFC and fight Overeem.. No1 can claim goat then go fight a guy that doesnt break the top 20..
He'll always be a legand, but in the same way Royce Gracie, and Chuck Liddell are legands. Not in a goat type of way.
