It's tough being named after a quasiperiodic climate pattern that occurs over the Pacific Ocean. It's even tougher when Chris Farley impersonated your moniker on The Weather Channel. Most of the MMA world sincerely believes Gilbert Melendez is the greatest lightweight on the planet -- yet it's impossible to verify those claims when that person has essentially cleared out the entire division in his respective organization. We'll never know how Gilbert will do against the top three in the UFC because there's some weird Showtime/ZUFFA power struggle going on that no one can fully understand.

yeah... i dont see any reason to believe gil is number 1. he had a close fight recently(that A LOT of people felt like he lost) with a guy who isn't even considered tops 5 or in my opinion even really 10.
plus you got that whole lack luster performance against Jorge Masvidal, and yeah... its hard to really rank gil over Ben Henderson, Frankie Edgar, Anthony Pettis, Nate Diaz(regardless of what he has to say just to be a good "bro"),Gray Maynard, even Donald Cerrone. in fact personal i think him and melvin guillard would be a damn good fight... so..

honestky this whole gil melendes thing is all hype because he looked good beating scrubs and a few top 20-10 guys. he has potential but he's never actually been tested.

until he beats a top 5 guy, i wont view him as number one, no matter how many magizines call him number 1
