Blast To The Past: Never forget BJ Penn Vs. Lyoto Machida

We're sure you know the old saying: the lowest form of conversation begins with 'Remember when', but not in MMA. We embrace the past and try to gently expand the collective knowledge of those who don't know the history of the sport like the back of a spinning fist. That's why Blast To The Past has been created - to revisit all of the rawsome moments that we were never able to cover and should be brought to the attention to the less astute MMA fan. And it's kind of fun to watch some old stuff on a Sunday afternoon, right?

In a fight that still throws off the balance of the universe to MMA Math students everywhere, the inaugural K-1 Heroes hosted an openweight bought between 225 pound Lyoto Machida and a 191 pound BJ Penn back in March of 2005. To set up the scene: this is about a year after BJ RNC'd Matt Hughes for the UFC welterweight title (which he vacated) and at this point BJ has won six of his last seven bouts since his loss to Jens Pulver, with only a draw to Caol Uno for the UFC lightweight title being his other smudge on a spotless record. He even has a victory over Gomi for the Rumble on the Rock earlier in the year for the lightweight title and submitted Duane Ludwig in under two minutes before facing Lyoto at the Saitama Super Arena. This was a Motivated Penn.

Machida was a 27 year old Shotokan Karate wielding badass (rather than a 34 year old Shotokan wielding badass) who is relatively new to the world of MMA in 2005. At 6-0 Machida had already faced quite a few notable names in his young career - Rich Franklin, Stephan Bonnar and Michael McDonald to name a few.

Watch the type of fight that may never be made again. Rawsomicity ensues.

And don't forget BJ Penn said this moments after Rashad Evans was KO'd by Machida:

He couldn't do that s*** to me!
