A massive LOL if any of you predicted that Cain would take a multitude of 10-8 rounds over JDS in a championship fight that went to the judges. We witnessed the reemergence of the same guy that was the first human being to knock out Big Nog (something that not even Fedor in his prime could do) along with placing a beating on Brock Lesnar so mind-blowing that it forced him to haphazardly breakdance in the middle of the cage.

Shame on any of you for doubting the voracity of Cain Velasquez. My god how fickle this MMA community can be at times. Now let me be the first to proclaim that we need to see Cain Velasquez vs. Alistair Overeem. It's MMA's new Fedor vs. Barnett. MMA gods, do not let us down -- please.

There's a lot of variables that goes into armbars. Ronda has done armbars from all sorts of setups and she knows how to over come her opponents defenses. It's like when Belfort armbared Jones. She said she probably would've ducked out the back & off balanced him first so that Jones couldn't slam her. She ducked out the back when Kaufman tried to stack her. Then she switched her grip & got an over-hook above Kaufman's arm lock for better leverage while maintaining control of Kaufman's far side shoulder with her legs. Her skill & intricate execution is on another level. Saying all Ronda does is armbars is like saying all Shakespeare did was write plays.

Bravo to Cain. He took the fight exactly where it needed to be and executed better than most people would ever have thought capable.

On the flip side, his takedowns looked like shit in the first round until he got them going, and he got predictable enough in round 3 onwards with his single leg attempts that JDS was able to rally and shake a good number of them off. That and the fact that an exhausted JDS was still catching him with some counter-shots shows that Cain still has legitimate holes in his game. I guess we'll soon find out if Reem can expose them better than JDS could.

If you follow Luke Thomas he had smart commentary on what Cain should employ. Push the pace against JDS by going for takedowns after takedowns to gas him out for at least the first round no matter how successful or sloppy it is. It was surprising to me as well. Cain didn't even seem to have to put in that much effort to overwork him. Clearly something was going on there beyond my ken.

As for the plan of 'spamming' takedowns, that's fair, it clearly worked for him. I just think he expended a lot of unnecessary energy doing so, and I especially remember thinking "he's lucky this isn't Pride rules, or else he'd be eating some serious soccer kicks." Which I know is a moot point when we're talking about a UFC fight, but a more aggressive counter-grapple r would have given him some serious trouble for those failed attempts. Clearly, he wasn't afraid of that happening, though.

JDS looked very fresh at the beginning of the fight. When he first was actually taken down, he actually swept Cain, and got right back up. Between that and the failed takedown attempts, I was anticipating a long night for Cain if JDS had the cardio to hang. After Junior got caught, he wasn't the same JDS. Any gameplan, etc, was out the window because all we saw from there on out was JDS purely in survival mode. Props to him for battling on when most guys would've been happy to see Herb Dean jump in.

Sonnen was able to land punches on Silva in their first fight because Silva had to worry about getting taken down. Strikers have to adjust what they like to do when they face certain grapplers. JDS couldn't strike the way he wanted to because it would leave him venerable to Cain's takedowns. This also left openings for Cain to land his own strikes.

This dynamic between striking and grappling is what helps Ronda Rousey in a lot of her fights. Julia Budd landed her straight right. But as soon as she did Ronda clinched and eventually got a takedown. When Tate was aggressive with her striking it left opportunities for Ronda to take her down. Kaufman used lateral movement to keep her distance but that allowed Ronda to be the aggressor and get a clinch & takedown anyway. Ronda is good at disguising exactly when she's going to clinch by using good timing, faints and clever strike-to-clinc h combos.
